The HSBC Rugby 7s series has already started and this weekend our national team the Shujaa represented us at the Capetown 7s held in Capetown South Africa. Kenya 7s were pooled against Samoa, Australia and Ireland.
The team performed exceptionally well to be able to make the main cup quarters unbeaten by having back to back wins against Samoa and Australia to set up a decider match to see who tops the pool with HSBC series newcomers Ireland.
The game ended in a draw but the Shujaa won the people’s hearts with their sheer resilience. We then met with hosts South Africa in the quarters but unfortunately lost 17-7.
This was one of the Kenya 7s best performance in 2 seasons and our standout player was Alvin “Buffah” Otieno who had scintillating runs and hits in the entire event leading to him being named in the dream team.
The shujaa’s next outing will be heading out to New Zealand for the Hamilton 7s on 26-27 January.
